Purpose and conduct of the study
The primary goal of the study is to examine the impact of social media usage on the mental health and academic outcomes of college students. The research explores social media's correlation with anxiety, depression, and sleep irregularities. The insights will serve as a basis for potential policy interventions and support for healthier digital habits among students, thus addressing a critical gap in understanding social media’s broader impact on young adults' lives.
Participant’s information (nature and extent of involvement)
Participants, a sample of 400 university students aged 18-30 from Hebei Province, China, will complete structured, quantitative questionnaires measuring their social media usage, academic performance, sleep quality, and emotional well-being. The involvement spans approximately one academic term, with each session expected to take around 30-45 minutes, depending on the length of the questionnaire. Participants' self-reported data will be collected using validated scales, ensuring comprehensive and reliable measures of the key variables.
Risk and inconveniences
Participants may experience minor discomfort when reflecting on their personal social media habits, potentially leading to anxiety or stress. The ICF includes a section outlining these potential risks, as well as available support. Risks are minimized by allowing participants to skip sensitive questions and providing access to counseling resources if needed. Participation remains entirely voluntary, and individuals can withdraw at any time without any negative impact on their academic standing.
Confidentiality and data management
All collected data will be securely stored, with personal identifiers removed and encrypted to ensure confidentiality. The data management plan adheres to the Data Privacy Law, implementing anonymization protocols. Data will be retained for a specified period and securely deleted following the study’s completion. The duration of the data was from the beginning of obtaining ethical permission to the completion of the study. Participants will have the right to request access to a summary of their own data, subject to privacy policies.
Access to the results of the study
Participants will receive a summary of the study’s findings upon completion and publication. They may also request access to their individual data, in line with confidentiality and data access policies. This transparency helps participants understand how their input contributed to the research outcomes.
Sampling Method
The study employs a stratified random sampling method, dividing participants by grade level to ensure a representative sample across different demographics. Academic performance data will be self-reported by participants to respect their privacy, avoiding direct requests for grades from university records.
Measurement of Social Media Use
Social media usage is measured through self-reported frequency, duration, and context via a standardized questionnaire. This approach ensures a detailed understanding of participants' engagement across various social media platforms.
Expenses and Compensation
No direct compensation or expenses are outlined, as the study does not involve interventions that would necessitate participant reimbursement. However, incidental costs like transportation may be covered.
Handling of Withdrawal Data
If a participant chooses to withdraw, their collected data will be excluded from the analysis, and any information gathered will be securely deleted to maintain the integrity of the research and respect participant autonomy.
Clarification on Sponsorship
The study is self-funded, with no external sponsorship or financial influence affecting the research process or outcomes. This independence ensures an unbiased analysis and reporting of the results.
