Language Learning Belief Survey

Directions: Please indicate the extent to which you agree or disagree with the following beliefs about SLA.
1. Learning anything, including a language, requires a great deal of repetition and memorization.
2. Teachers and learners are both responsible for the learner’s progress.
3. Language learning involves a lot of imitation and repetition.
4. You can’t learn to speak a language until you’ve heard it; you can’t learn to write a language until you’ve read it.
5. First and second language learning are exactly the same.
6. If people are exposed to a lot of input in a second language (e.g., people talking to and around them), they will naturally begin speaking the language.
7. Learning a second language is like learning to ride a bike. After practicing, the skill becomes automatic, and you don’t have to think about how to perform it.
8. In classroom activities as learners communicate and negotiate with classmates, their language develops.
9. When language learners work in groups, they end up learning each other’s mistakes.
