Hello! This survey aims to understand university students' perceptions of rabies and their attitudes toward vaccination. The survey is anonymous, and the results will be used for academic research purposes only. Thank you for your support!
Part 1: Demographics (Profile) 1. What is your major/field of study? Medicine, Biology, or related fields Non-medical fields
2. What is your current pet ownership status? Currently own a dog/cat Previously owned one, but not currently Never owned a pet
3. Was your pet (current or past) vaccinated against rabies(狂犬病) regularly? Yes, strictly followed the annual vaccination schedule. Vaccinated, but irregularly/occasionally forgot. Never vaccinated/Felt it was unnecessary. Unsure (e.g., adopted a stray recently).
Part 2: Vaccination Experience (Practice) 4. Have you or your peers ever received the rabies vaccine? Yes, I have received it personally. No, but I have accompanied a friend/classmate to get it. No experience at all.
5. Recalling that experience, what was the condition of the wound? Obvious Bleeding: Bitten/scratched with visible blood (Grade III exposure). Minor Scratch: Minor scratch or abrasion without bleeding (Grade II exposure). Intact Skin/Contact: Licked on intact skin or simple touch (Grade I exposure). Indirect Contact/Panic: No direct contact, just fear (e.g., suspected airborne transmission, touched a cage, etc.).
Part 3: Knowledge & Misconceptions 6. Which of the following scenarios do you believe can transmit rabies? Being bitten by a rabid stray dog causing bleeding. Being licked on intact hand skin by a healthy, vaccinated house dog. A minor scratch (white mark, no blood) from a cat. Sharing food or utensils with a dog.
7. Regarding the "Incubation Period" of rabies(狂犬病潜伏期), which statement do you tend to believe? Mostly 1-3 months; extremely rare to exceed 1 year. It can remain latent for 10 or even 20 years. I have no idea.
8. Do you believe a healthy-looking, active dog can carry the rabies virus (i.e., "Healthy Carrier")? Yes, healthy dogs can carry the virus. No, healthy dogs do not carry the virus. Unsure.
9. Are you aware of the "10-Day Observation Method"(十日观察法) recommended by the WHO? Yes, I know it and trust its scientific validity. I’ve heard of it, but I don't trust it/don't think it applies in China. Never heard of it.
Part 4: Attitude & Psychology 10. Scenario: Suppose you were lightly scratched (no blood) by a neighbor's dog that is vaccinated regularly. What would you do? Wash with soap immediately and observe the dog (Apply the 10-Day Observation Method). Although the risk is low, I would get the vaccine just for peace of mind. Panic immediately and demand both the vaccine and immunoglobulin (serum) at the hospital.
11. At the clinic, if the doctor offers two options, which one would you prefer? A. Economical: Choose the standard domestic vaccine (approx. 300-400 RMB); believe the efficacy is the same, save money where possible. Premium/Peace of Mind: Choose the more expensive freeze-dried/imported vaccine (approx. 1000+ RMB) because of perceived safety or fewer side effects. Deterred: I would give up on vaccination because of the high price.
12. If you choose to get vaccinated, what is the primary driver? Professional medical advice. The near 100% fatality rate makes me afraid to take any risks. Pressure from parents or friends. Fear caused by horror stories/videos seen online.
13. What are your primary channels for obtaining information about rabies? Social media (Weibo, RedNote, TikTok/Douyin, etc.). Official news / CDC official accounts. School education/Classes. Casual conversation with friends/family.
